Partnering workshop June 11-13, 2010
Matt Kent and the Wormhole Project present an unprecedented weekend partnering intensive in Atlanta which will investigate fundamental techniques and the approach to advanced partnering Matt Kent has developed over 14 years performing with Pilobolus, world famous for their unconventional partnering.
Matt is a freelance director and choreographer, and Artistic Director of PickleShoes, an Atlanta-based company dedicated to family and children's programming in school assembly performances, as well as symphonic venues in collaboration with Rob Kapilow. PickleShoes most recent commission Jabberwocky!, a Rob Kapilow collaboration, premiered last year at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center. Matt has created over two dozen new works with Pilobolus in their famously collaborative approach which often features unique theatrical advanced group partnering. Last year, Matt co-created ShadowLand with Pilobolus, Steve Banks, lead writer for Spongebob Squarepants, and composer David Poe.
Partnering is a way to approach collaborating with another artist. It is a metaphor for working together. Too often partnering is utilized as an isolated event, as one picture, often a final or culminating cadence within a dance, but, in fact, it can be much more. Partnering can be a continuous exchange of weight and information between two or more bodies. With this in mind, creative possibilities are available which otherwise would not be.
This is the first workshop here in Atlanta to investigate systematically the method for approaching partnering. This workshop will focus on honing skills and collecting new tools to take partnering to the next level.
- Fundamental principles of full weight partnering
- Continuous partnering: making seamless transitions from one lift to another
- Partnering for duets, trios, and more
- Mining unique partnering material through improvisation
- Enriching partnering events with theatrical meaning
Be prepared to sweat, to get sore, and to have a blast. Wear comfortable clothes. Bare feet. We will close the event with a cookout on Sunday after the workshop at DAIR for discussion and to eat drink and be merry.
